Sunday Fun Day

UNPAID REVIEW

Hello fellow bookworm. I’m back with another book review just in time for World Book Day to give you some inspiration or ideas for a gift. I found this one in our local library. Libraries are a fantastic resource for any book lover young or old and is completely free. As a home educating mother, the library is one of the first go to points when looking for new content. This time, we picked up ‘National Trust: Sunday Fun Day’ by Katherine Halligan, a wonderful book of 52 activities, one for every weekend of the year.

Synopsis:

This is a guide providing 52 activities for children (approx. 7-9 years as per the publisher’s website) divided by season and is intended to provide ideas of things to do with your children for every Sunday of the year. It also includes a list of key kits, safety tips and keyword index.

Review:

‘Sunday Fun Day’ has over 100 pages full of amazing indoor and outdoor activities. Being a National Trust book, it is of course intended to bring people to the wonderful sites they are trying to preserve, but even if you don’t have a NT site on your doorstep, you’ll be able to do most of these activities by going to your local woodlands, park or (own / community) garden. I love that it gets children to pay attention to their surroundings, interact with nature and bring it into their homes, while exploring their own senses (tactile / sound / scent in particular) and giving their creativity free range.

Activities range from little outdoor adventures, collecting and using nature finds for art projects, gardening projects, seasonal activities (e.g. pumpkin carving, egg painting), but also some lovely recipes that can’t be cooked together as a family.

The beautiful illustrations by Jesùs Verona are also worth a mention!

Does this book provide any ideas that can’t be found on Pinterest, Instagram etc.? Probably not. So if you’re happy using those resources then you probably won’t need this one. But if you are like me, a prefer to have a physical reference book (I have lots of pins on my Pinterest but hardly ever look at them) then this might be a good investment. The publisher gave this an age range of 7-9 years, but I’ll definitely be doing some of these activities with my younger daughter and will revisit many of these activities over the years. This book will definitely go on my ‘want to buy list’.

The title is available from the publisher’s website, but probably also from various other sources:
